SEASIDE, Calif. -- The Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team battled its third consecutive South Division opponent in Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex. While it looked like the Otters may have broken out of their offensive slump in the 4–1 win in game one, the Coyotes came back in game two and silenced the Otter bats in a 5–1 win and a twinbill split.
Game one of Saturday's doubleheader featured CSUMB starter
Gabe Katich (San Jose / Mount Pleasant HS) in arguably his best game of the season. Katich held a no–hitter into the seventh inning until the Coyotes broke through with a pinch–hit double off the bat of Brian Lockey.
CSUMB got a run in the bottom of the first inning off of an error by the CSUSB shortstop that allowed
Will Rosado (Clovis East HS) to score. In the third inning the big bats came out as
Justin Flores (Clovis West HS) smacked his fourth home run of the season. This time his big fly to right field was a three–run shot that gave CSUMB a 4–0 lead after three innings.
The Coyotes got run in the eighth inning off of CSUMB reliever
Drew Kozain (Redondo Union High School), but
Kyle Narahara (Castro Valley HS) pitched the ninth inning a struck out the side en route to his sixth save of the season and a 4-1 Otter win.
San Bernardino got off to a hot start due to a shaky two innings from CSUMB starter
Ryan Boydstun (La Quinta HS). Boydstun allowed four run across including three in the second innings alone. Between the end of the second inning and the end of the seven inning, Boydstun was lights out, retiring 10 batters in a row at one point.
CSUMB could manage one run in game two.
Ruben Gonzalez (Murrieta Mesa HS) got to third on an error by the Coyote right fielder and
Matt Urakami (San Jose, Calif. / Branham HS) drove him in the third innings. CSUMB allowed one more run to the Coyotes in the eighth and took the 1–5 loss in game two.
Monterey Bay is now 23–9, 12–8 CCAA. The series finalé is Sunday at 11 a.m.
