ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- The Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team came into their doubleheader with Sonoma State on Monday in third place in the CCAA North Division race. By the end of the day, the Otters would be alone in first place after wins of 2–1 and 3–1 over the Seawolves. No. 15 ranked CSUMB is now 25-9, 14-8 CCAA.
GAME 1 | CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY 2, SONOMA STATE 1
The Otters were able to pull out a one–run win thanks to acceptional pitching from
Jared Koenig (Aptos HS) in his second win of the season (2–0). Koenig tossed eight innings on five–hit, one–run ball with 10 strikouts in the narrow win for CSUMB.
Kyle Narahara (Castro Valley HS) earned his CCAA leading seventh save of the season but shutting down the Seawolves in the ninth inning.
CSUMB scored right off the bat in the first inning on a RBI single by
Kevin Davidson (Yucaipa HS) to give the senior his 34 RBI of the season and the Otters a 1–0 lead early. Sonoma scored in the bottom of the second to knot the game at 1-1.
The score remained tied until the eighth inning when
Brian Bostjancic (Sir Francis Drake HS) knocked in
Ruben Gonzalez (Murrieta Mesa HS). Bostjancic's RBI proved to be the winning run in the 2-1 win.
GAME 2 | CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY 3, SONOMA STATE 1
Behind a committee of pitchers and timely hitting, the Otters were able to take game two of Monday's doubleheader by a score of 3-1.
Jake Chutney (Trabuco Hills HS) got the start and allowed the only Seawolf run on five hits. Chutney was followed by four relievers including
Jorge Alvarado (Fresno City College) who earned his second win by pitching one and two–third innings of shut out ball with four strikouts.
Narahara (S,8) came in for his third save in four games in the ninth and while things got interesting, the junior right-hander bounced back with two strikouts and an impressive defensive play by third baseman
Matt Urakami (Branham HS) to end the game.
CSUMB scored early with one run in the second and third inning to take a 2–1 lead.
Will Rosado (Clovis East HS) knocked in his first RBI on a double to to right in the second. Rosado put the Otters up 3–1 in the seventh inning with his fifth big fly of the season.
Monterey Bay will head south to play Cal State L.A. in a three game series beginning on April 16.
