POMONA, Calif. -- Eliminating Monday's doubleheader at Stanislaus State, the Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team had scored 19 runs in its last six games combine. In Sunday afternoon's series finalé against Cal Poly Pomona, the Otters scored a CSUMB single–game record 23 runs in the 23–6 win.
In the offensive awakening, Otter first baseman
Kevin Davidson (Yucaipa HS) drove in a CSUMB single–game record eight RBIs. Davidson also smacked two doubles in his 5–for–7 day at the plate, giving him a team leading 15 two baggers on the season.
CSUMB did not waist any time in getting the offense rolling, scoring four times in the first inning highlighted by a 2–RBI single by
Chris Blanton (Burlingame HS) giving CSUMB a 4-1 lead after the first inning.
The scoring was far from finished after the first inning as CSUMB collected one run in the second and fifth innings to hold a 6–2 lead. The flood gates opened in the 3–run sixth inning and was followed by a 6–run seventh inning. Davidson kicked off the scoring in the seventh with a 2–RBI single to center field. Davidson and
Hayden Duer (Davis HS) each knocked in two RBIs in the 6–run inning to stretch the lead to 15-3.
After one run in the eighth, CSUMB capped of the afternoon with seven more runs in the ninth inning including the record–setting RBIs by Davidson. Pomona crossed the plate three times in the bottom of the ninth, but it was too little too late for the Broncos as the Otters rolled to the 23–6 win.
"We really needed a well played game and needed out offense to kick back into gear," says head coach
Walt White. "Pomona is a really good club. I'm proud of the way we bunced back after being outplayed yesterday."
The Otters are now 22–8, 11–7 CCAA and sit in third place in the CCAA North Division. CSUMB faces a new challenge next weekend as it will play five games in three days. Cal State San Bernardino will visit the Otter Sports Complex for a three games series beginning on Saturday, April 9. Monterey Bay will then head to Rohnert Park, Calif. for part one of two rescheduled doubleheaders with Sonoma State on Monday, April 11.
