ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- The Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team finished up their long weekend with a doubleheader at Sonoma State to end a five games in three day stretch. CSUMB could not piece consistent offense together as the Otters fell to the Seawolves by scores of 3-10 and 2-4.
Game one was a back and forth affair with CSUMB and SSU trading leads of 1-0, 1-2, 3-2. Sonoma State took a lead for good in the seventh inning with two runs, taking a 4-3 lead. The undoing came in the eighth as CSUMB could not seem to get out of the inning allowing Sonoma to place a six on the scoreboard en route to a 10-3 lead and win. With limited arms in the bullpen,
Jeffery Ahern (Anderson HS) was stuck in the eighth inning and could not escape.
Avery Ortiz (West Ranch HS) came in with two outs in the inning and got the last out of the eighth.Â
CSUMB could not find offense in game two either as Sonoma State started Ryan Luna, who shut down the Otters. The Otters ran out
Jorge Alvarado (Fresno City College) to start game two and he and Luna had a pitchers duel going into the fourth inning. However, SSU figured Alvarado out in the bottom of the fourth and put up four runs to take a 4-0 lead.
CSUMB got one back in the top of the sixth on a fielding error by SSU. The Otters chased Luna out the game by scoring once in the top of the seventh inning to narrow the deficit to two runs at 2-4. With one out and a runner on first, SSU made the change to Jackson Zarubin to come in for the save. Zarubin faced
Matt Urakami (Branham HS) and induced a game ending double play and send CSUMB off with a 2-4 loss.
The Otters are now 26-13, 15-12 and are in second place in the CCAA North Division, one-half game behind Chico State for first place. Monterey Bay will battle UC San Diego in a three game series at home beginning on Saturday, April 23.
GO OTTERS!
