LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- After the Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team was swept in Saturday's doubleheader against Cal State L.A., the bats came alive in a see-saw affair in the series finalé on Sunday. The Otters scored 18 times on 18 hits en route to an 18-9 win, avoiding the series sweep.
The Otters and Golden Eagles went back-and-forth in Sunday's game that led to an offensive shoot out. The Otters jumped out to a two run lead right out of the gate in the top of the first inning, but CSULA answered with a 2-run homer in the bottom half of the inning to knot the game at 2–2 early.
CSUMB regained the lead in the third inning on one swing of the back.
Hayden Duer (Davis HS) smacked his eighth home run of the season, bring in three runs on the big fly and giving the Otters a 5-2 edge. The Golden Eagles came back with a run in the bottom of the third, but CSUMB still led 5-3 after three full innings.
CSULA put up a crooked number in the bottom of the fourth innings with a five spot, highlighted by a 2-RBI single by Christian Broussard, putting the hosts up 8-6 after the four innings of play. CSUMB scored once in the fifth inning to cut the 2-run deficit in half at 7-8.
Bryan Bostjancic (Sir Francis Drake HS) and
Josh Heinz (West Ranch HS) grabbed RBIs in the 3-run sixth inning to put the Otters back on top, 10-8. CSULA would score once in the bottom half of the inning
to put the score at 10-9 after six full innings.
CSUMB really broke things open in the late innings with five runs in the eighth and three runs in the ninth. Both big innings featured
Matt Urakami (Branham HS) who drove in two runs in both the eighth and ninth innings, leading to the 18–9 final score.
Urakami finished the afternoon with five RBIs, while Duer and
Kevin Davidson (Yucaipa HS) knocked in three runs in the win.
Justin Flores (Clovis West HS) recorded two RBIs. Four other Otters had one RBI each.
Nick Milone (Chatsworth HS) earned his second win of the season (2-0) after allowing a run on a hit in an inning and two–thirds innings of work in relief.
CSUMB is now 26-11, 15-10 and remains in first place in the CCAA North by a half game. Monterey Bay will not have much rest as it will head to Sonoma State for a doubleheader Monday.
