Quasi–Doubleheader Goes CSUMB’s Way vs Warriors

Duer hits 3 HR's; Otters take two from Warriors

SEASIDE, Calif. -- The Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team finally wrapped up game one of the series against Stanislaus State on Tuesday after a lengthy rain delay took place on Friday. CSUMB was able to hold on for the win in addition to grabbing the doubleheader sweep in game two.

CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY 9, STANISLAUS STATE 1
CSUMB got off to a hot start in game one and saw production from the bottom of their lineup with RBI from Brian Bostjancic (Forest Knolls, Calif. / Sir Francis Drake HS) and Matt Urakami (San Jose, Calif. / Branham HS) to give CSUMB a 2–0 lead. In the third inning, Hayden Duer (Davis HS) began his offensive show, smacking his fifth solo shot of the season to left field to extend the lead to 3–0.

More home runs came in the fifth inning off the bat of Will Rosado (Clovis East HS), his second of 2016. Duer led off the sixth and pounded his six big fly of the season and second of the day, handing CSUMB a 6–1 lead. After the Stanislaus top of the seventh is when the rain began to come down and the game was officially halted and rescheduled.

Cut to Tuesday afternoon and Duer was able to pick up where he left off driving his seventh home run of the season and third of the game, this time a two–run shot to bring in Kevin Davidson (Yucaipa HS). Jeffery Amaral (Sunnyvale / Saint Francis HS) followed suit and hit his first homer of the season to give CSUMB a 9–1 win.

Gabe Katich (San Jose / Mount Pleasant HS) pitched very well in his outing on Friday with seven strong innings, nine strikeouts and his third win of the year (3–1).

CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY 4, STANISLAUS STATE 2
The Warriors jumped on the Otters out the gate with a Michael Chavarria triple followed by an RBI groundout by Patrick Mulry to take a 1–0 lead in the top of the first inning. However, CSUMB struck back with two runs in the bottom of the third that came in on a Warrior error to take the lead back at 2–1.

CSUMB found one more in the fifth and gave up one in the sixth before finding insurance in the bottom of the eighth inning to grab a 4–2 lead. Drew Kozain (Redondo Union High School) came in on relief of CSUMB starter Ryan Boydstun (La Quinta HS) and earned a three and one-third inning save. Boydstun (3–1) threw five and two–thirds innings of two run ball.

Monterey Bay improves to 15–3 and 4–2 CCAA and will play at Sonoma State next weekend. Stay tuned to OtterAthletics.com and @OtterAthletics on Twitter for scheduling updates for the SSU series as rain is expected in the area.
