SEASIDE, Calif. -- Fresh off a doubleheader sweep on Saturday, the Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team looked to capture the series sweep on Sunday. However, San Francisco State had other plans as the Gators were able to salvage a game in the series and beat CSUMB for the first time at home, 7-4.
SFSU beat CSUMB its own game by scoring early. The Gators scored once in the first and once in the second to grab a 2–0 lead. San Francisco tacked on one more in the sixth before Monterey Bay was able to score in the bottom half of the inning. While it wasn't pretty the Otters were able to plate two runs in the bottom of the sixth on a wild pitch that allowed
Kevin Davidson (Yucaipa HS). Garrett Brown followed with an RBI ground out to put CSUMB within one at 2–3.
CSUMB could not get the shut down inning and allowed SFSU to score once more in the seventh to take a 4–2 lead. However,
Justin Flores (Fresno, Calif. / Clovis West HS) came up with a runner on in the seventh and walloped his third home run of the season, a two–run shot over the right field fense to tie the game at 4–4. The big fly made it 10 RBIs in the series for Flores as he went 10–for–17 (.588) at the plate.
After a scoreless eighth inning by reliever
Kyle Narahara (Castro Valley / Castro Valley HS), the junior trasfer allowed a tie breaking two RBI triple to SFSU's Andrew Breen that eventually led to a 4–7 loss for the Otters.
The loss is CSUMB's first at home this season. Monterey Bay is now 18-4, 7-3 CCAA and will play a three game series agsint Cal State Dominguez Hills next. First pitch is set for 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 25 at the Otter Sports Complex.
