TURLOCK, Calif. -- The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team began a four a game road trip on Friday night at Stansialus State in what was a low scoring matchup. CSUMB failed to break 50 points for the fourth time in five games en route to a 44–47 loss to Stan State.
CSUMB netted four points in the first quarter, their lowest quarter total of the season, and trailed 4–12 after the first 10 minutes. The Otters followed up the first quarter with a 14 point second quarter that put them within one point of the Warriors at 18–19 at intermission.
Monterey Bay trailed by as many as eight points in the third quarter, but
Alexa Sperling (Clovis, Calif. / Buchanan HS) scored five of the final 10 Otter points in a 10–0 run to end the quarter. CSUMB ended the third on a
Kaila Turner (Pasadena, Calif. / Maranatha HS) three pointer with one second remaining to give the Otters a two point edge, 35–33.
The defensive struggle continued in the fourth quarter as the Warriors regained the lead early. CSUMB was able to keep it close, however, getting to within one point at 44–45. Down by two and 56 seconds left in the game the Otters had fouls to give. Stan State sunk the their free throws late, but only led by three with 10 seconds remaining.
Brianna Tucker (San Jose, Calif. / Clovis North HS) got a shot off in the time span, but could not get it to fall as the Warriors hadned CSUMB a 44–47 loss.
Courtney Keaton (Los Angeles, Calif. / Bishop Montgomery HS) led the Otters in rebounds with eight, while Tucker led in points with nine. The Warriors Riley Holladay led all scorers with 13 points.
Monterey Bay will head to Chico State for the second half of a back–to–back on Saturday night. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
