CHICO, Calif. -- In what was a series to be remembered, the Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team had a shot at winning the series on Sunday afternoon. However, Chico State had other ideas. The Wildcats scored early and often, sending the No. 16 Otters back with a series split of the early season CCAA battle.
Chico State got things started right out of the gate, scoring once in each of the first three innings to put CSUMB in a 0–3 hole in game four. The Wildcats' Cameron Santos made that deficit 0–5 in the sixth inning on a two–RBI single, effectively knocking out CSUMB starter
Ryan Boydstun (La Quinta HS). The Otters did put a run up in the seventh inning on a
Jeffery Amaral (Sunnyvale / Saint Francis HS) RBI single, but the Wildcats kept it at a five run lead with a run of thier own in the bottom of the inning.
Trailing 1–6, the Otters had their final chance in the bottom of the ninth. CSUMB managed to make some noise scoring twice on
Hayden Duer (Davis HS) and
Bryan Bostjancic (Forest Knolls, Calif. / Sir Francis Drake HS) RBI singles to make the score 3–6. Unfortunately, a fielder's choice grounder got Bostjancic out at second and ended the threat of a comeback for CSUMB.
Amaral and
Chris Blanton (Burlingame HS) led the offense with 2–for–4 performances at the plate. Boydstun was tagged with the loss and falls to 2-1.
Monterey Bay will return to the friendly confies of the Otter Sports Complex for a home–and–home series with Stanislaus State beginning on Friday, March 4.
GO OTTERS!
