TURLOCK, Calif.. -- The Cal State Monterey baseball team traveled to Stanislaus State on Saturday afternoon for a nonconference affair with a conference foe in the Warriors. CSUMB scored early, but could not keep the offenseive pwoer alive in the laste innings, allowing Stan State to fight back and hand CSUMB its first loss of 2016, 9–10.
The Otters found pay dirt in the second inning, and it kicked off with
Hayden Duer's (Davis HS) fourth homerun of the season. CSUMB wasn't finished in the second as
Myles Hager (Tarzana, Calif / Chaminade College Prep), Brian Bostjancic (Forest Knolls, Calif. / Sir Francis Drake HS), and
Will Rosado (Clovis East HS) all contributed RBIs in the big 5–run inning.
Up 5–0, CSUMB scored three more times in the third inning led by Hager's second RBI of the game. However, the Warriors would not go quietly as the hosts touched home plate four times in the bottom of the third inning, cutting the Otter lead in half, 8–4.
After cutting into the Otter comfort zone even more with two runs in the fifth inning, Stanislaus switched the script on the Otters. The Warriors found late inning heroics in the bottom of the eighth inning trailing by two runs. Nick Molina drove a 2–2 pitch in center field, driving in two runs that were unearned due to Otter errors earlier in the inning. Molina's double proved to be the difference maker as CSUMB had a 1–2–3 top of the ninth inning leading to the 9–10 loss.
Gabe Katich (San Jose / Mount Pleasant HS) got the tough luck loss after pitching three innings in relief. Stan State's Nick Voumard was untouchable in relief, throwing seven innings of 1–run ball with nine strikeouts.
Duer and Hager each had two RBIs while
Chris Blanton (Burlingame HS) went 3–for–5 at the plate while scoring twice and driving in a run.
Monterey Bay will come home to play Stanislaus State in a single game on Sunday beginning at 2p.m.
