AZUSA, Calif. -- Sunday afternoon brought the series finalé between the Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team and Azusa Pacific, and it did not disappoint. Fighting through an APU comeback and a 10–10 tie, the Otters were able to survive and complete a series sweep with a 14–12 victory.
The heat of the Otter offense carried over from Friday's doubleheader as CSUMB put up another crooked number with a three spot in the second inning, led by
Myles Hager's (Tarzana, Calif / Chaminade College Prep) third home run of the series. That was only the beginning as CSUMB took off in the third inning, plating seven runs.
Kevin Davidson (Yucaipa HS) was responsible for four of the seven runs by smacking his second grand slam of the season.
Brian Bostjancic (Forest Knolls, Calif. / Sir Francis Drake HS) hopped on the scoring train by knocking in two runs on a double to left field, leading the Otters to a 10–0 lead after three innings.
Azusa Pacific was able to cut its deficit in half by scoring five runs in two innings. Three of the Cougar runs came via RBI singles. The APU bullpen was able to keep the Otters quiet, which enabled the Cougars to come back and tie the game in the eighth inning by scoring five runs.
Azusa got things started in the eighth on a bases loaded hit by pitch. The HBP was followed by a bases loaded walk and then a two–RBI single. The scoring streak ended with an RBI single by Pablo O'Connor, making it a brand new game at 10–10.
Fortunately for Monterey Bay, the Otters had Hager due up in the top of the ninth. After a strikeout, an
AC Nuñez (Corona, Calif. / Roosevelt HS) double, and a fly out, Hager proceeded to drive his second home run of the game over the fence, giving CSUMB a 12–10 lead. More insurance was needed and
Will Rosado (Clovis East HS) answered the call. On a 1–0 count, the senior outfielder unleashed on one, bringing home Bostjancic on the two–run big fly, handing the Otters a 14–10 lead.
Rosado's home run proved to be the difference in the game as APU touched home twice in the bottom of the inning before
Kyle Narahara (Castro Valley HS) closed the door, securing the win and the series sweep.
Next up for the 9–0 Otters is a nonconference tout against CCAA foe Stanislaus State. Monterey Bay will play a single game in Turlock on Feb. 20 before playing a single game in Seaside on Feb. 21.
GO OTTERS!
