POMONA, Calif. — For the second time this season, a Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball game against Cal Poly Pomona came down to the final shot. For the second time, the Otters couldn't get that shot to fall as Cal Poly came back late to pull out a 61–60 victory Thursday night in Kellogg Arena.
CSUMB righted last weekend's shooting woes by connecting on 47 percent from the floor (23-of-49), its third-best shooting night of the season. But foul problems inside proved too much to overcome as
Mykayla Harris and
McKenna Hill played through early whistle trouble before both fouling out midway through the fourth quarter.
Pomona center Mary Williams took full advantage, scoring 21 of her game-high 29 points in the second half. She was responsible for eight of the Bronco's 18 second chance points, including the biggest two with the game on the line.
After a Williams layup gave Pomona just its second lead of the game at 59-57,
Stephanie Sack (Petaluma/Santa Rosa JC) knocked a three from the corner to put the Otters back on top, 60-59 with 24 seconds remaining. The Broncos fed Williams one more time, and after throwing her initial layup attempt over the rim, she bulled her way to her fourth offensive board and easily laid in her second opportunity in to give the Broncos the lead for good.
The Otters had 14 seconds to respond, but could manage only an NBA-range 3-pointer from Sack, which didn't find the target.
Sack led three Otters in double figures with 13 points and a game-high six assists.
Victoria Dorn (Seaside HS) added 12 and a career-high five assists. Freshman
Brianna Tucker (Clovis North HS) reached double figures for the fourth time this season with 10.
CSUMB concludes it 4-game roadtrip Saturday night at Humboldt State. The Otters return home to host Cal State L.A. and Cal State Dominguez Hills Feb. 19-20.
GO OTTERS!
