Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | By Kevin Gilmore (@OtterKevin)

Men Can’t Overcome Cold Shooting 67-54 Loss

Otters shoot season lows of 35 pct. from the floor and 20 pct. from the arc vs. San Bernardino

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team was able to overcome its coldest shooting night of the season for one half, but it eventually succumbed in the second half of a 67–54 loss to Cal State San Bernardino Saturday in The Kelp Bed.

CSUMB shot just 36 percent from the floor in the first half but still managed to scrap its way to a 30–30 tie at intermission. But the Otters began the second period an even colder 1-for-6 from the field, allowing San Bernardino to go on a 12–2 run to open its first double–digit lead at 42–32.

The Coyote lead hovered between eight and 17 points for the duration of the game.

Freshman guard Jahvon Johnson (Clovis North HS) and junior swingman Shawn Smith (Jacksonville, Fla./Texas A&M) led the Otter offense with 14 and 13 points respectively. Gregg Polosky (San Ramon Valley HS) pulled down a game–high 10 rebounds..

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… A Dorian Butler layup made it 67–50 in favor of the Coyotes with 1:58 remaining.

ICE, ICE BABY… CSUMB shot a frigid 35.3 percent from the floor Saturday night (18-of-51). including a 3-for-15 (20.0 pct.) effort from beyond the arc. Both percentages were season lows.

ON THE REBOUND… Gregg Polosky pulled down 10 boards Saturday night for his second double–figure night of the season. That ties him with Julien Ducree for the team lead though eight games.

BOO–YAH FOR BOUYEA… Junior guard Jonquis Bouyea (Seaside HS) continues to garner the most significant playing time of his career. Saturday night, he scored a career–high five points and match his career high with two rebounds.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jahvon Johnson 14; REBOUNDS: Gregg Polosky 10; ASSISTS: Stephen Matthews 5; BLOCKS: Gregg Polosky 2; STEALS: Jonquis Bouyea 2.

THE LAST WORD… "For us having played last night and them not having played since Wednesday, I thought we matched energy. I thought we got out–played last night. Tonight, I don't feel like we got out–played. We've just got to make shots." – CSUMB Head Coach Rob Bishop

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters hit the road for their final trip before the Christmas break when they head to Turlock to meet Stanislaus State Friday (Dec. 9). Tipoff will be at 7:30 p.m. as the nightcap of men's/women's doubleheader action.
