KENTFIELD, Calif. — Playing with a roster featuring just seven healthy bodies at game's end took its toll down the stretch as the Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team stayed close for a half before fading in a 75–57 loss to Sonoma State Saturday night at the College of Marin.
CSUMB began the night with eight healthy players before losing freshman
Stephen Matthews (Sacramento HS) to an apparent ankle injury in the second half. Nevertheless, the Otters kept Sonoma within three points with less than a minute to play in the first half.
But the Seawolves eased away midway through the second half, using a series of small runs to eventually build a lead as big as 24 points before settling on the 18–point final margin.
Freshman
Jahvon Johnson (Clovis North HS) led a balanced Otter offense with 11 points.
Gregg Polosky (San Ramon Valley HS) pulled down a game–high nine rebounds.
THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Ronnie Harris' layup in transition off a Jordan Fleck steal made it 69–48 Seawolves with 4:47 to play.
COLLEGE OF MARIN? Yes, Saturday's game was played at the College of Marin due to renovations currently taking place at Sonoma State's on campus facility.
IT'S GETTING LONELY ON THE BENCH… With
Isaiah Smith and
Jack Biebel both on the IR list, the Otter roster was down to eight healthy players this week. As a result, a season–high six Otters played 20 or more minutes Saturday night, led by freshman
Jahvon Johnson, who followed a season–high 36–minute effort Friday at Stanislaus with 35 minutes at Sonoma.
LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS:
Jahvon Johnson 11; REBOUNDS:
Gregg Polosky 9; ASSISTS: Three Otters 3; BLOCKS:
Julien Ducree 1; STEALS: Three Otters 1.
THE LAST WORD… "We played okay in the first half, but after Stevie (Matthews) went down in the second half, we just got tired. We're asking guys to play a lot of minutes who are getting their first taste of playing back–to–back games at this level." –
CSUMB Head Coach Rob Bishop
THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will take a break from in–season action to play an exhibition game against Bristol University in The Kelp Bed on Monday, Dec. 19. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Admission will be free for all spectators.
GO OTTERS!
