SEASIDE, Calif. — Senior forward
McKenna Hill (Ventura/St. Bonaventure HS) gave a tour de force performance Sunday afternoon to lead Cal State Monterey Bay to an 81–73 win over visiting Holy Names University in The Kelp Bed.
Hill's second consecutive double double included 15 points and a CSUMB record 18 rebounds as she led the Otters (3–2 overall) to their third consecutive win. Her afternoon overshadowed a 12–point, 16–rebound double–double by
Alexa Sperling Clovis/Buchanan HS) and a 21–point game from senior guard
Victoria Dorn (Seaside HS).
CSUMB trailed just once Sunday, and that was early in the game. The Otters took the lead for good on a Dorn 3–pointer late in the first quarter. A pair of
Brianna Tucker (San Jose/Clovis North HS) free throws begat a 7–0 Otter run to open the second half and the Hawks never got closer than eight points the rest of the way.
THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN… Brianna Tucker made a pair of free throws to push the Otter lead to 78–64 with 1:40 remaining.
CHAIRWOMEN OF THE BOARDS… First we give props to
McKenna Hill for setting the CSUMB record with 18 rebounds Sunday against Holy Names. It's also worth noting that
Alexa Sperling actually tied the previous record of 16 set twice by Julie Heurung, last against Chico State in 2011.
LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS:
Victoria Dorn 21; REBOUNDS:
McKenna Hill 18; ASSISTS:
Aubri Smith 4; BLOCKS: Hill/Smith/Sperling 1; STEALS: Five Otters 1.
THE LAST WORD… "I have complete confidence in her when she has the ball in her hands that she's going to make the right decision." –
CSUMB Head Coach Kerri Nakamoto on point guard Aubri Smith
THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters take a short break from their run of home action to visit Dominican University Friday (Nov. 25) in San Rafael. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
GO OTTERS!
