SEASIDE, Calif. -- Due to threat of rain in the Fresno area, the Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team rescheduled its game against Fresno Pacific to be played at the Otter Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon. The Sunbirds found paydirt after the first two batters produced the first run of the game. Luckily, starting pitcher
Gabe Katich (San Jose, Calif./Mount Pleasant HS) found his groove and kept the FPU bats quiet, allowing CSUMB to come back for a 5–2 win.
After FPU struck early, the Otters were able to tie the game in the fourth inning on a
Kevin Davidson (Yucaipa HS) home run, his second in three games. CSUMB tacked on one more in the fifth inning on a
Matt Urakami (San Jose, Calif. / Branham HS) RBI triple to take a 2–1 lead. CSUMB scored once in each of the next three innings, featuring big flys from
Hayden Duer (Davis HS) and
Justin Flores (Fresno, Calif. / Clovis West HS), their second and first home runs of the season, respectively.
With a 5–2 lead, the bullpen stepped up for the Otters as
Jacob Cox (Madera, Calif. / Liberty HS) pitched three innings of two–hit baseball en route to his first save of the season and a 5–2 victory for CSUMB.
Urakami continued to produce, this time from the two spot in the lineup, with two more RBIs on the day. In addition to Urakami's two–hit day,
Myles Hager (Tarzana, Calif / Chaminade College Prep) contributed two hits as well. He also scored twice in the Otter win. On the mound, Katich racked up five strikeouts in five innings of work, allowing a run on three hits for his first win of the season.
Monterey Bay improves to a 3–0 record and will face CCAA opponent Sonoma State on Saturday, Feb. 6 for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is set for 11:00 a.m
