SEASIDE, Calif. -- It may have been an unorthodox doubleheader, but the Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team got the job done with late inning heroics on the way to a double header sweep of Sonoma State on Saturday afternoon.
GAME 1: CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY 7, SONOMA STATE 6 (F/10)All was quiet in the first three innings, but the Otter offense errupted for five runs in the fourth inning to take a 5–0 lead. The cooked number was highlighted by four RBIs from different players. However, Sonoma State had a big inning of their own in the seventh, plating four runs to put pressure on CSUMB. Leading 5–4,
Steven Zaharias made the eighth inning more difficult than it had to be, eventually allowing the tying run to score on a balk call.Â
No scoring in the ninth inning took the game in to extra innings for the first time this season. SSU was able to get a run on the board on a Philip Ramos RBI single to give Sonoma a 6–5 lead. The Otters would not go down easy, however. After
Kevin Davidson (Yucaipa HS) was hit by the pitch,
Justin Flores (Fresno, Calif. / Clovis West HS) walked and
Hayden Duer (Davis HS) singled, CSUMB was in a prime postion for the walk off. On a 1–1 pitch,
Chris Blanton (Burlingame HS) drove the ball to right field bringing in Davidson to tie and the pinch runner
Brian Bostjancic (Forest Knolls, Calif. / Sir Francis Drake HS) to end the over four hour game in a 7–6 Otter win.
Blanton led the offense with three RBIs, two of which came on the walkoff hit. In a game that feature 12 Otter pitchers, not one pitched more than an inning..
GAME 2: CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY 7, SONOMA STATE 6 (F/6)The second game of the twinbill only went for six innings due to darkness in the sixth inning, but it was a walkoff situation, tied 6–6 going into the bottomg of the sixth. After two quick strikeouts, Duer pinch hit and singled into center field to keep the inning alive. Bostjancic then reached on a throwing error, that advanced him and Duer into scoring position.
Matt Urakami (San Jose, Calif. / Branham HS) wanted his chance to be the hero and he got it. On a 2–2 pitch, the lefty went the other way into left field to bring home Duer from third and send CSUMB into the night with the 7–6 win.
Josh Heinz (Santa Clarita, Calif. / West Ranch HS) had a 2–for–3 day at the plate with two RBIs and a run scored. Six pitchers threw an inning each for CSUMB.Â
Monterey Bay will hit the road for the first time this season to battle west region foe Azusa Pacific for a 4–game series beginning on Thursday, February 11.
