SEASIDE, Calif. — We begin our search for the most memorable moment of 2014–15 CSUMB Athletics Year in the fall, when seven Otters earned All–CCAA recognition in addition to several other notable accomplishments. Records broken, thrilling upsets and a well–deserved moment in the national spotlight highlight the most memorable moments for the fall for you to consider in our Memorable Moments countdown.
As a reminder, Otter fall sports include: M/W Cross Country, M/W Soccer and Volleyball. Note that, while the golf teams do compete in the fall as well as the spring, for purposes of this countdown, all golf achievements are counted in the spring.
Without further ado, here are the top moments from the Fall 2014 seasons for your consideration…
| SEPTEMBER 28, 2014 • TOTAL TEAM EFFORT LEADS OTTERS OVER No. 3 STANISLAUS Junior Kristen Womack (Roseville/Woodcreek HS) scored the match–winner, but the Otters used a total team effort to upend eventual NCAA Quarterfinalist Cal State Stanislaus 1–0 at the Otter Sports Complex. | OCTOBER 3, 2014 • GONZALES GOAL SINKS HIGH–FLYING SAN FRANCISCO STATE San Francisco State visited the Otter Sports Complex on October 3 flying high atop the CCAA standings. That was before junior Rudy Gonzales (Bakersfield/Independence HS) turned the match on its ear with a spectacular match–winner to lift the Otters to a 2–1 victory. | NOVEMBER 8, 2014 • BELL TOPS OWN RECORD WITH 4TH PLACE FINISH AT CCAA MEET After becoming the first Otter cross country runner to earn All–CCAA honors as a sophomore in 2013, Hannah Bell (Yorba Linda/Esperanza HS) took it to the next level as a junior, finishing fourth at the 2014 CCAA Championship Meet. | NOVEMBER 18, 2014 • MALCOLM FINISHES ON FIRE TO EARN NATIONAL AWARD In the final weekend of the season, junior Jessica Malcolm (Lodi HS) broke a 9–year–old school record on Friday night and nearly did it again Saturday to earn NCAA Division II Player of the Week honors from the AVCA. She became just the second volleyball player in CSUMB history to earn the honor, joining Julia Ashen (North Salinas HS) in that exclusive club. CLICK HERE TO READ THE FULL STORY. |
| NOVEMBER 22, 2014 • GARLAND GOES OUT IN STYLE Senior Ben Garland (Santa Cruz/Harbor HS) made his final Otter appearance a memorable one. He smashed his own Otter record in the 10K while just missing out on CSUMB's first–ever NCAA Championship berth with a 23rd place finish at the NCAA West Regional Championship Meet.
