LA JOLLA, Calif. -- The Cal State Monterey Bay Baseball team battled with UC San Diego in the series finalé and was able to earn a solid team win in the 7–6 victory on Sunday afternoon at Triton Ballpark in La Jolla.
UCSD got out to a 1–0 lead after one inning of play, but CSUMB came through with a crooked number in fifth inning as they plated three runs to take a 3–1 lead.
Ty Morris (Royal Oaks, Calif. / North Monterey County HS) drove in the Otters first run to tie the game at 1–1 one his first of three hits in the ballgame. CSUMB got its second run on a bases loaded hit–by–pitch that allowed
Brian Hamm (Pleasanton, Calif. / Amador Valley HS) to score from third, giving MB a 2–1 lead.
Curtis Gomez (Watsonville, Calif. / St. Francis HS) manufactured the third run of the inning for the Otters on a fielder's choice to second base and pushed in Morris for a 3-1 lead. UCSD regained the lead in the bottom half of the fifth inning with three runs of its own off of CSUMB starter,
Ryan Boydstun (La Quinta HS). Down a run, the Otters came back in the sixth and recorded its second three–run inning of the game to take the lead back at 6–4. After Hamm drove in a run on a double to left field,
Justin Flores (Fresno, Calif. / Clovis West HS) recorded two RBIs on a double to left center putting CSUMB on top.
Kory Groves (Citrus Heights, Calif. / Oakmont HS) came in on relief of Boydstun in the fifth inning and after recording a scoreless sixth inning allowed the Tritons to tie the game at six in the seventh inning. However, Groves (2–1) ended up with the win after Morris drove in the eventual winning run in the eighth allowing the reliever from Elk Grove to shut the door on the Tritons, sending the Otters home with a big series split.
"I'm proud of our team," says head coach Walter White (@MBCoach_White). "We rolled the momentum from game three into today."
Morris and Flores each tallied two RBIs, while Hamm, Morris and
Devin Finn (Pleasanton, Calif. / Amador Valley HS) all scored twice in the victory. The Otters wrap up their final road trip of the season with a series split and improve their record to 24–16, 20–12 CCAA.
"Today was a really good game between two good teams." said coach White.
Monterey Bay will have its conference bye week next week, but will battle West Region opponent Holy Names in a two–game series on Friday and Saturday, April 17–18. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. in Oakland on Friday.
