OTTERS vs. PENGUINS HIGHLIGHTSHAYWARD, Calif.—Cal State Monterey Bay played an exciting brand of basketball Friday afternoon in its 2015–16 season opener, but a big individual effort from Dominican's Alyssa Weatherd did the Otters in as the Penguins pulled away late for an 88–78 win in Cal State East Bay's Pioneer Gym.
The game was the season–opener for both sides and tipped off the CCAA Conference Challenge.
The Otters got a career–high 21 points from junior guard
Victoria Dorn (Seaside HS). Junior forward
McKenna Hill (Ventura/St. Bonaventure HS) chipped in a career–high six assists while senior forward
Jazmine Johnson (Garden Grove/Santa Ana College) just missed a double–double with 14 points and nine rebounds.
The game was closer than the final score indicated, with nine ties and 11 lead changes. The Otters appeared ready to pull away themselves when they built a 7–point lead with the ball midway through the third quarter.
But Weatherd put the Penguins on her back, scoring 25 of her game–high 29 points in the second half to single–handedly carry Dominican down the stretch.
The Otters will conclude their opening weekend of play against Western Oregon Saturday in Hayward. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
 GO OTTERS!
