HAYWARD, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team put a nice flourish on its opening weekend, leading nearly wire-to-wire to close play at the CCAA Conference Challenge with a 59–50 win over Western Oregon University Saturday afternoon in Pioneer Gym.

Senior forward Jazmine Johnson (Garden Grove/Santa Ana College) led the way for the Otters (1–1 overall) with 11 points and 14 rebounds for her fifth career double–double. The Otters also got a game–high 13 points from junior forward McKenna Hill (Ventura/St. Bonaventure HS).

CSUMB trailed just once in this game at 7–4 three minutes in. But a Victoria Dorn (Seaside HS) trey and a Hill free throw quickly erased that deficit. From there, the Otters gradually built a 13–point lead at the half, 30–17.

A Hill layup early in the second half gave the Otters their biggest lead of the day at 33–19 before Western began chipping away to add some doubt to the outcome. The Wolves pulled to within three points three times in the fourth quarter, the last at 44–41, before a Stephanie Sack (Petaluma/Santa Rosa JC) 3–pointer ended the run.

Western never had the ball within a possession of the lead over the final six minutes.

The Otters will take a week off before returning to the East Bay area to play at Pac West Conference rival Holy Names University in Oakland Saturday at 2 p.m.
