Otters Claim Big Win, Shock No. 3 Stanislaus 1–0

Kristen Womack's goal lead Otters to defeat of highest-ranked opponent in program history

SEASIDE, Calif. — Coming off a heartbreaking 3-2 loss at No. 20 Sonoma State on Friday, Cal State Monterey Bay's women's soccer team had reason to believe it was ready for something big. Sunday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex, the Otters proved themselves right with a 1-0 victory over No. 3 Cal State Stanislaus.

It was the highest ranked opponent ever defeated by Otter women's soccer, who beat then No. 12 Chico State 2–1 in 2012.

The Warriors came into the match riding a streak of 25 road games without a loss (21–0–4). They hadn't lost a regular season match dating back to the 2012 season (26–0–2). But on this misty Sunday afternoon in Seaside, none of that mattered.

CSUMB (4-3-0, 1–1–0 CCAA) showed that hustle and determination could provide the perfect storm for victory. Grinding it out early in the first half, the only notable scoring attempt came on a shot in the 6th minute by senior midfielder Jami Murray (Newbury Park/CC of San Francisco), which went wide right.

Stanislaus (8-1-0, 1–1–0), favored sending through balls to the attacking side of the pitch to spring where CCAA leading scorer Jade Poon (9 goals) and No. 4 scorer Kirsten Coleman (6 goals) provided an ever–present threat. But the Warriors had trouble finding their timing and were called offside three times in the first half.

CSUMB starting goalkeeper Lily Garza (Redwood City/CC of San Francisco) went out due to an injury concern late in the first half. Freshman Samantha Webb (Murietta Valley HS) replaced her and changed the tempo in the Otter defensive third.

Weather by design or adjustment, Stanislaus played a less direct style for the balance of the game. Although they forced Webb to make just one save over the final 57 minutes, the Warriors became a more dangerous team.

The Otters, meanwhile, took advantage of several penetrating runs out of the back from senior defender Shoshana Wangerin (Pleasant Hill/College Park HS) to finally unlock the Warrior defense. Just past the hour, Wangerin made a fantastic run from the back to help free Taylor Greenwood (Norco HS) down the left wing. Greenwood lofted perfect cross to forward Kristen Womack (Roseville/Woodcreek HS) who beat Chelsea Lewandowski for her third goal of the season.

The Warriors were not without their own opportunities in the second half. In the 47th minute, Jordan Moineau skimmed the top of the crossbar from high in the penalty area. Just before Womack's strike, Poon sent one just left of Webb's post.

"I think from our last game on Friday (at Sonoma), which we should have come away with a win, we were already fueled," said CSUMB Head Coach Erin Reinke. "They just raised the bar. I'm so proud of the team. We're finding our consistency in our performance and at the same time the team has a lot of passion when it plays."

Having slain Goliath, the Otters have their sights on greater goals, including finishing in the top four for the CCAA and qualifying for the conference tournament.

"Now that we've set such a high bar—knowing we can beat the top teams in our conference—we're shooting to win a conference championship," said Reinke.

The Otters will be looking to carry their momentum forward to Friday's home match against San Francisco State. Kickoff with be at 3 p.m. as the nightcap of men's/women's doubleheader action.
