SEASIDE, Calif. — On Friday afternoon, the Cal State Monterey Bay Women's Soccer team battled San Francisco State in a defensive matchup that featured one first half goal to give CSUMB the narrow 1-0 win over SFSU in front of a supportive crowd at the Otter Sports Complex.
In a first half that warranted five shots total, the highlight of the half went to the Otters. At the start of the 38th minute,
Regan Porteous (Lodi, Calif./St. Mary's HS) received an entry pass from
Sierra Townsend (Glendora, Calif./St. Lucy's Priory) that she kicked hard enough to pass through the outstretched hands
of the Gator netminder.
"We need to work on our consistency and our performance, but we had a little bit of luck with us today and were able to get the win", explained head coach
Erin Reinke.
While both teams had their fair share of time on their opponents side of the field, it was a combined 19 offside calls that negated many of the advances. The Otters ended the match with six shots, while the Gators totaled three. SFSU goaltender contributed three saves to her squads defensive efforts. For the Otters,
Lily Garza (Redwood City, Calif./City College of San Francisco) was without a save, but notched her first win in goal
CSUMB improves it's record to 5-3, 2-1 CCAA, while SFSU drops to 5-4 and 0-3 in conference play.
Cal State Monterey Bay will hit the road for three consecutive games starting with a trip to Hayward, Calif. to take on Cal State East Bay. Kickoff is slated for 2:00 p.m.
