Headers Hurt Otters Fall To Pioneers, 3–1

Porteous nets second goal in as many games, fifth of the season

HAYWARD, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay Women's Soccer team fought hard against Cal State East Bay on Sunday afternoon, but fell to the Pioneers by a score of 3-1 at Pioneer Stadium in Hayward, Calif. While the Otters were the fist to crack the scoreboard, three unanswered goals by CSUEB would upend CSUMB dropping them to a record of 5-4-0, 2-2-0 in the CCAA.  The Pioneers improve to 5-4-2, 2-2-0 CCAA.

Regan Porteous (Lodi, Calif./St. Mary's HS) got the Otters on the board in the 19th minute when she had a one–on–one breakaway and dribbled passed the CSUEB goaltender to knock in her fifth goal of the season and second in as many games.

"[Regan] is starting to have a nose for the goal," said head coach Erin Reinke about her junior forward, "she was consistent with her play and had a good presence on the field."

Unfortunately, the Pioneers would tie the score 11 minutes later when Rachel Armstrong used her head to hit back net and knot the score at 1-1. Armstrong struck for a second time in the first half, with her head, off of a free kick from 18 yards out, giving CSUEB the 2-1 lead. For the third time in the match, a header would result in a goal for Cal State East Bay.  This time it was a flick from Alyssa Rodriguez to give the hosts the 3-1 lead and eventual win.

Although the Otters led in total shots (18-9) and in shots on goal (7-3) they were not able to make the most of their opportunities, taking the hard 3-1 loss.

Cal State Monterey Bay will continue to play on the road next week when they meet up with Cal State Los Angeles on Friday, Oct. 10.  Kickoff will take place under the lights at 7:00 p.m.
