Otters Fall To CSULA Due To Early Pentalty Kick

Otters led in shots 15-7, but were unable to get one in back of net

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Under the Friday night lights of Jesse Owens Track in Los Angeles, Calif., the Cal State Monterey Bay Women's Soccer team played their heart out against Cal State Los Angeles Golden Eagles.  However, due to a foul in the box, CSULA was granted the fortune of a penalty kick which saw the back of the net, handing CSUMB a 1-0 loss.

It was a yellow card on Otter goalie Lily Garza (Redwood City, Calif./Woodside HS) in the 18th minute of the game that led to a CSULA penalty kick that found the back of the net to give the hosts the 1-0 lead early on.  It turned out that the PK would be the only goal of the game, even though the Otters led in shots 15-7, Cal State L.A. countered with 7 saves.

"We were unfortunate to not come out with a win tonight," said head coach Erin Reinke. "As a coaching staff, we are very proud of our team's performance and the heart they showed on the field tonight.  We will build on what we have done so far this season and focus on Dominguez Hills on Sunday."

After the loss, Cal State Monterey Bay falls to an even .500 record over at 5-5-0, 2-3-0 CCAA, while Cal State L.A. moves to 10-1-1, 5-0-0 CCAA.  The Otters travel to Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sunday.  Kickoff is set for 11:30 a.m.
