Otters Wrapup Preconference Schedule With 2–2 Draw

Otters and Hawaii–Hilo share the spoils in an entertaining match

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team wrapped up its preconference schedule with an entertaining 2–2 draw versus Pacific West Conference foe Hawaii–Hilo Tuesday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.

CSUMB (1–2–2 overall) got goals from Anthony Velazquez (Gilroy/Gavilan College) and Julian Salas (Long Beach/Lakewood HS) sandwiched between early and late goals by the Vulcans (2–2–1).

"It was a physical game and Hawaii–Hilo played liked I thought it would: hard," said CSUMB Head Coach Rob Cummings (@RobCummings3). "That being said we had a 2-1 lead and, instead of controlling the game, we allowed Hilo to get back in it."

Hilo came out the more energetic side and punished the Otter backline with a well–deserved goal in the fifth minute. Jamie Sporcic led a quick counter following a turnover near midfield and fed Mike Reckmeyer in the middle of the box for a sure finish and a 1–0 lead.

The Vulcan score snapped the Otters out of their early lethargy and the offense responded with an equalizer barely 10 minutes later. Chris Koski (Cupertino/Monta Vista HS) fed a short pass to Velazquez just outside the penalty area and Velazquez pumped a no–doubter inside the left post.

The action went up and down the field for the balance of the first half, with the field tilting slightly in favor of the Otters. The advantage in momentum carried through halftime and Otters parlayed that into arguably their best goal of the young season two minutes after the restart.

Lalo Avalos (Salinas/Alisal HS) and Max Madrigal (Oxnard HS) sent passes back and forth across the penalty area. Salas latched on to the last one and left Hilo goalkeeper Tyler Hoffman no chance.

Play leveled out after the second CSUMB goal. The Otter backline did a good job neutralizing the speed of Cristian Ruelas and Evan Bacani and the impressive technical play of Sporcic as the Vulcans played down the wings looking for the equalizer.

It didn't look like the goal would ever come until a misplayed pass found the feet of Ruelas in the CSUMB defensive third. Ruelas sprinted around the now exposed right flank and lofted a near post cross to Bacani running unmarked. His perfect header just eluded the fingertips of a diving Evan Drake (Sacramento/El Camino HS) in the 75th minute and the match was square.

Both overtime periods featured one–way traffic as the Hilo defense battened down the hatches to survive the storm. Less than two minutes in Rudy Gonzales (Bakersfield/Independence HS) saw his close range shot blocked before Hoffman saved Nick Stanley's (Yucaipa HS) follow–up attempt.

CSUMB maintained its territorial advantage for the balance of the match, though the Otters didn't get another shot on frame after Hoffman denied Madrigal in the 100th minute.

"We controlled overtime but at the end of the day we have to settle for a draw," said Cummings. "Now we turn our attention to Sonoma and CCAA play."

The Otters return to action Friday when they travel to Rohnert Park for their CCAA opener at Sonoma State. They return home to host Cal State Stanislaus Sunday for a 2 p.m. kickoff at the Otter Sports Complex.
