Lightning Strikes (Literally) In Loss At Sonoma

Long lightning delay in second half part of CCAA opening setback

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team couldn't overcome a defensive lapse in the first half and a long weather delay in the second half, falling in its CCAA opener at Sonoma State 1–0 Friday evening at Seawolf Field.

Miscommunication between the Otter backline and goalkeeper gifted Sonoma the only goal of the match in the 19th minute. The Otters rallied after that, outshooting Sonoma 7-3 over the final 46 minutes, but without finding the equalizer.

The Otters also had to play through a sea of cards as referee Michael Samaan saw fit to pull out his book 10 times in the match, issuing the first seven cards to the Otters. Both teams ended the match with 10 men on the field.

"The match was not short of drama," said CSUMB Head Coach Rob Cummings (@RobCummings3).We came out flat in the first  half and they took advantage. However the second half it was a different story as we controlled the game but could put one away. And the lighting delay didn't help."

Heavy rains turned into thunder and lightning  midway through the second half and the teams were forced to abandoned the field in the 68th minute. Nearly an hour later, play resumed, though with no flow as Samaan issued seven of his 10 bookings in the final 12 minutes.

"I was proud of our fight in the second half," said Cummings. "If we can ever put two halves together, we will make some noise in the CCAA."

The Otter return home to host Cal State Stanislaus Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. The Otters and Warriors played to a scoreless tie in Turlock on Sept. 16.
