Two 1st Half Goals Too Much To Overcome In Loss

Otters allow first goal 9 seconds into the game in 2–0 defeat to Stanislaus

SEASIDE, Calif. — An absolute nightmare of an opening nine seconds set a somber tone for the Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team, which couldn't overcome yielding a shocking early goal en route to a 2–0 loss to Cal State Stanislaus Sunday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.

Stanislaus scored seconds after the opening kickoff. The Warriors took the ball straight down the middle of the field, creating a miscommunication between the Otter backline and goalkeeper Evan Drake, who came 10 yards off his line while none of the back four could beat Warrior forward Jose Ramirez to the ball. Ramirez simply chipped the ball over Drake's head as it softly bounced it's way to the back of the net.

Stanislaus kept the pressure on and doubled its lead in the 20th minute when Ramirez played a short through ball down the left channel to Manny Villegas. With the Otter backline unable to help, Drake came out and made a brave challenge, but Villegas deftly curled the ball inside the right post to close the scoreline.

"Well, again like the Sonoma game, we came out flat and paid the price with a goal against us in the first nine seconds today," said CSUMB Head Coach Rob Cummings (@RobCummings3). "In the second half, chasing the game, I was proud of that group for its effort."

The Warriors kept the pressure on, compiling an 18–8 shot advantage, though with the exception of a 71st minute effort from Ramirez that rung off the left post, didn't come close scoring again.

For its part, the Otter offense registered four shots in each half. But it never really asked Stanislaus goalkeeper Clint Long any questions as he made three pedestrian saves to record his second shutout of the season.

"I told the boys today, you can't put your heads down when we did it to ourselves," said Cummings. "Fair enough if you're putting your head down because you played 90 minutes of good soccer and didn't get a result. But we haven't done that. What happened today was some reserves stepped in won starting jobs."

CSUMB will look to bounce back into the win column when it hosts San Francisco State Friday (Oct. 3) in the opening game of a men's/women's doubleheader at the Otter Sports Complex. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
