Defender Shoshana Wangerin scored her first goal since 2012 to lead the Otters past the Penguins Sunday afternoon.
BOX SCORE SEASIDE, Calif. -- The Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer team equaled the best 5–match start in program history by posting a 3–0 shutout of Dominican University Sunday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex. CSUMB improved to 3–2–0 for just the second time ever, matching the start of the 2012 team.
Freshman
Ashlee Cortez (Mission Viejo/Trabuco Hills HS) gave the Otters the only offense they would need, scoring her first collegiate goal in the 36th minute. Senior defender
Shoshana Wangerin (Pleasant Hill/College Park HS) added her first goal since 2012 early in the second half before
Regan Porteous (Lodi/St. Mary's HS) closed the scoring with her second of 2014.
CSUMB controlled the early stages of the match, but Dominican soon caused problems on the counter attack. In fact, the Penguins created the first good scoring chance when Lauren Gollnick broke down the left wing on a partial breakaway in the 36th minute. But freshman goalkeeper
Samantha Webb (Murietta Valley HS) came off her line to make a strong challenge and keep the game scoreless.
It took the Otters just 17 seconds to respond by giving Dominican a taste of its own medicine. The defense quickly cleared Webb's save on Gollnick to midfield.
Hannah Cobb (Hollister/San Benito HS) made a good read and sent a long through ball to Cortez, who carried the ball around Penguin goalkeeper Sylvanna Islas for simple finish.
"I thought we did a good job of adjusting to Dominican's style of play," said CSUMB Head Coach
Erin Reinke. "They were very physical and tested our backline by trying to send a lot of balls over the top. But we held firm didn't give up many good chances."
Wangerin doubled CSUMB's lead eight minutes after the restart as the Otters again scored on the counter. This time
Sidtia Sidtikun (Escalon/Ripon HS) made the key pass, finding Wangerin streaking down the middle. Wangerin raced ahead of the Penguin backline and beat Islas 1v1.
The Otters put the match out of reach in the 72nd minute with a more traditional build up. This time they worked the ball back and forth across the field. Cobb ended the series of passes by sending a far post cross to Porteous, who headed home the clincher from the doorstep.
Webb made three saves in 80 minutes before giving way to
Lily Garza (Redwood City/CC of San Francisco). The duo combined for CSUMB's second consecutive shutout and third in its last four matches.
CSUMB returns to action Friday when it heads to Wine Country to open CCAA play at Sonoma State. The Otters return home to host Cal State Stanislaus next Sunday.
GO OTTERS!
