BOX SCORE

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer team gave a strong performance, but in the end it wasn't enough to topple Sonoma State from the ranks of the unbeaten in a 2–0 loss at Seawolf Field Sunday afternoon.

The teams played to a near statistical draw, with a pair of Magi Osmundson goals providing the separation that allowed the Seawolves to improve to 5–0. CSUMB dips to 1–2 with the loss.

The Otters had their first crack at goal just 40 seconds into the match when Hannah Cobb (Hollister/San Benito HS) sent one outside the left post. They also had the last shot of the half when McKenzie Moe (Modesto/Enochs HS) sent one over the cross bar in the 34th minute.

They were the only two shots CSUMB managed in the first half. But the Otter defense more than held its own, limiting Sonoma to just three attempts before halftime.

The match turned on the hour when Osumndson took a short corner from Sara Van Wagoner, dribbled to the upper left corner of the Otter penalty area, then curled a shot over the head of freshman goalkeeper Samantha Webb (Murrieta Valley HS) and into the left side net to open the Seawolf scoreline.

Osmundson needed just seven minutes to double the Sonoma advantage. This time she took an outlet pass down the left flank from Jori Wider and floated what appeared to be a cross to the far post. Webb seemed to have a bead on it, but it slipped through her hands and in for Osmundson's third score of 2014.

The Otters had two great chances to cut into the deficit. The first came in the 74th minute when Seawolf goalkeeper Allison Hadidian dove left to turn Michelle Garrone's (Petaluma HS) shot around the post. Ten minutes later, Kristen Womack (Roseville/Woodcreek HS) saw Hadidian fully extend to tip her effort over the crossbar.

For the match, both teams recorded three shots on goal, with Sonoma holding a 7–6 edge in total shots. Webb made one save for the Otters while Hadidian recorded three.

The Otters return home to host UC Santa Cruz Tuesday (Sept. 16) for a noon kickoff at the Otter Sports Complex. The match was originally scheduled to be played in Santa Cruz Sept. 11 but was postponed for logistical reasons. Attendance will be free for all fans but, as a reminder, parking regulations will be enforced.

GO OTTERS!
