Otters celebrate after Nicole Pires 2-run blast over the CSUMB scoreboard

Otters reach first-ever NCAA Regional title game with school postseason record 13 runs

BOX SCORE

SEASIDE, Calif. -- A huge third-inning broke open the winners bracket contest, giving top-seeded Cal State Monterey Bay a 13-1 win over fourth-seeded Cal Baptist Friday at the Otter Sports Complex. It marks the first time that the Otters have advanced to a regional championship game.

CSUMB (47-9) advances to Saturday's final day needing one win to advance to their first-ever Super Regional. Cal Baptist (45-12), which saw its 11-game win streak snapped, came back late Friday to defeat Western Oregon and will face the Otters in the regional final.

The 13 runs scored were a postseason record for the Otters. CSUMB's 12-4 win over Montana State-Billings in 2012 represented its previous record output.

Junior pitcher Cori Reinhardt (Riverside Poly) was the benficiary of the bombardment. She tossed four innings of 2-hit ball to earn her 21st win of the season. She is the only pitcher in Otter history to win 20 or more games in a season twice.

The Otters jumped on Cal Baptist starter Belinda Renne early, scoring twice in the top of the first inning courtesy of a 2-out, 2-run double from Nicole Pires (Ontario/Colony HS). But the fireworks really began in the third inning. Two-run homers from Pires, Bianca Noriega (Ventura/Camarillo HS) and freshman Jenae Coleman (Castaic/Hart HS)Ā highlighted an 8-run outburst that put the game out of reach.

Cal Baptist got on the scoreboard courtesy of Ashley's DeVeare's single in the bottom of the second to pull the Lancers to withinĀ 2-1 before the Otters pulled away.

Pires led the CSUMB offense, finishing the day a career-best 4-for-4 with two doubles, a homer and four RBIs. Reinhardt, Noriega, Anneliese Lopez (Ventura/Buena HS) and Trina Solario (Manteca/San Joaquin Delta College) all added doubles to the 15-hit Otter attack.
