the Cal State Monterey Bay softball team to a sweep of Cal State East Bay and a share of the lead in the CCAA race Saturday at the Otter Sports Complex.
The Otters took the opener 1–0 on
Bianca Noriega's (Ventura/Camarillo HS) walk–off single in the seventh. The Otter offense exploded for seven runs in the nightcap to support
Lindsey Clarkson's (Fresno/Central HS) second shutout of the weekend in a 7–0 victory.
The wins pulled CSUMB (15–4, 9–3 CCAA) into a tie with No. 11 UC San Diego, which split a pair at Sonoma State Saturday. East Bay dropped 6–14 and 5–11 with the losses.
Junior
Cori Reinhardt (Riverside Poly) led the way to the sweep in the circle and at the plate. She tossed a 4–hit shutout in the opener—her third win of the week—before going 2–for–3 with three RBIs in the nightcap.
The Otters needed every bit of her pitching magic in Game 1. CSUMB put five runners on base in the first two innings, but a pair of defensive gems by East Bay shortstop Nikki Foster bailed Pioneer starter Emily Perlich out of both jams.

Perlich then settled down and tossed 4 2/3 innings of no hit ball until
Alissa Greenhaw (Galt/Cosumnes River College) led off the seventh with a bunt single. A sacrifice moved to Greenhaw to second in front of Reinhardt, who came back from an 0–2 count to draw a key 2–out walk, setting the table for Noriega.
The sophomore designated player took three pitches before bouncing a single through the right side to score Greenhaw standing up.
Game 2 saw no such drama as
Brianne Hollon (Agoura Hills/Alemany HS) singled, stole second and came around to score on a Reinhardt single in the first to provide Clarkson all the support she would need.
Madison Casto (Sunnyvale/Homestead HS) and
Annelise Lopez (Ventura/Buena HS) added run–scoring singles later in the first before Reinhardt's 2–run single in the second made the final five innings academic.
They were academic thanks to Clarkson, who followed her Friday 1–hitter with an 8–strikeout, 3–hit performance Saturday. Clarkson pitched out of trouble just once, when a 2–out single by Lauren Vestal and a pair of 5–pitch walks loaded the bases. But she coaxed cleanup hitter Ali Cerminara to pop to shallow left to end the threat.
Clarkson retired 13 of the final 14 Pioneers she faced to seal the win.
Reinhardt and Noriega led the Otter offense. Reihardt had three hits and three RBIs while Noriega added four hits and two RBIs. Noriega's double in Game 2 was the only extra base hit for either team on the day.
CSUMB returns to action Monday with a nonconference doubleheader against West Region rival Holy Names University at the Otter Sports Complex. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
