SEASIDE, Calif. — Weather has wreaked havoc on the Cal State Monterey Bay softball schedule over the last few weeks. In fact, Wednesday's doubleheader versus Academy of Art was scheduled to be played in San Francisco but was moved to the Otter Sports Complex due to unplayable field conditions.
Given that, the Otters would have been excused for being a bit rusty in their first competition since Feb. 22. But they shook off whatever rust there was en route to a 6–0, 6–2 sweep of the Urban Knights.
CSUMB (11–4 overall) got an absolute gem from
Cori Reinhardt (Riverside Poly) in the opener. She threw 6 1/3 innings of no–hit ball, struck out six and allowed just two fair balls to reach the outfield while earning her fourth win.
Reinhardt was nearly perfect through six innings (she allowed just a walk in the third). ArtU couldn't find a way to solve her until Lauren Stover rolled a 1–out single through the left side in the seventh. But Reinhardt followed by inducing a ground out then fanning pinch hitter Jessica Marin to bring the current down on her second career 1–hitter.

The Otters scored the only run they needed when pinch runner
Katie Denio (Tustin/Santiago Canyon CC) scored from third on a 2–out error. Junior catcher
Nicole Pires (Ontario/Colony HS) removed all doubt from the outcome with a 2–run single in the third inning followed by a 2–run homer in the sixth.
Relief pitching took center stage in the nightcap as
Bianca Noriega (Ventura/Camarillo HS) and
Danica Arterburn (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs HS) combined for 5 2/3 innings of shutout ball to lead the Otters to the 6-2 win. Noriega earned her second win of the season while Arterburn picked up her first collegiate save.
Noriega also provided her own artillery support, crushing a 2–run double to the gap in left center in a 3–run third inning that gave the Otters the lead for good.
Freshman second baseman
Brianne Hollon (Agoura Hills/Alemany HS) led the CSUMB offense with five hits Wednesday, including a 4–for–4 effort in game one. Freshman first baseman
Madison Casto (Sunnyvale/Homestead HS) added four hits, going 2–for–3 in both games, including a pair of doubles in the opener.
CSUMB returns to CCAA action this weekend with a pair of doubleheaders against Cal State East Bay Friday and Saturday at the Otter Sports Complex. First pitch each day is scheduled for noon.
