SEASIDE, Calif. -- The No. 16 Cal State Monterey Bay softball continues not just winning, but winning in every phase of the game. The Otters ran their current win streak to eight games by dominating in the circle, in the field and at the plate in an 8–0, 1–0 sweep of San Francisco State Saturday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.
CSUMB improved on the best start in school history by running its record to 26–5 overall (16–4 CCAA). Only the 2012 CCAA Champion Otters, who were 23–8 after 31 games, started in the same ball park as this season's squad.
Otter victory Saturday started in the circle, where junior
Cori Reinhardt (Riverside Poly) threw her third shutout of the season, lowering her season ERA to a CCAA–leading to 1.56 and raising her record to 11–3 with the win in Game 1. She also had a great game at the plate, going 2–for–3 with a double and two RBIs.
But Clarkson did Reinhardt one better in the nightcap. She threw her seventh shutout of 2014—and her fourth complete game allowing three or fewer hits—to improve to 13–2 in her sophomore campaign. Like Reinhardt, Clarkson also starred at the plate, hitting a third–inning double before scoring the only run of the game.
Although both Clarkson (1st) and Reinhardt (3rd) rank among the CCAA leaders in strikeouts per game, they relied on their stellar defense to tame the Gators Saturday. Reinhardt fanned just two in the opener and Clarkson just three in the finale, but the Otter defense handled 60 chances without an error.
CSUMB raised its fielding percentage to .981 for the season, a mark that leads the CCAA by more than 20 points. If the season ended today, that would smash the school record of .967 set last season.
The Otters won with two different styles of offense Saturday. In Game 1, they used power to create a big second inning that iced the game early. Reinhardt's 2–run double and a 2–run homer by
Alissa Greenhaw (Galt/Cosumnes River College) highlighted the 5–run outburst. It marked the third time in the last six games the Otters scored at least five in a frame.
Game 2 saw CSUMB work to manufacture the game's lone run. Clarkson's 1–out double to the fence in right center set the table before ground ball errors off the bats of
Danica Arterburn (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs HS) and
Courtney Varela (Harbor City/Torrance HS) brought Clarkson around.
CSUMB will take a 2–week break from conference action as it prepares to travel to the annual Tournament of Champions in Turlock April 4–6. Before that, however, the Otters will host West Region rival Central Washington in a doubleheader Wednesday at the Otter Sports Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
GO OTTERS!
