SEASIDE, Calif. -- The No. 16 ranked Cal State Monterey Bay softball team ran its current winning streak to six games and continued the best start in school history by sweeping San Francisco State 6–2 and 3–0 Friday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex. It's the second winning streak this season of at least six game for CSUMB, which improved to 24–5 overall and 14–4 in the CCAA.
The Otters took Game 1 with a 6–run fourth inning to support another superb start from junior
Cori Reinhardt (Riverside Poly), who carried a no–hitter for 6 1/3 innings Friday. Although an error and three ground ball singles led to a pair of unearned runs in the Gator seventh, it wasn't nearly enough to prevent Reinhardt from earning her 10th win of the season.
CSUMB did all of its damage with its second 6–run inning in its last three games. Freshman
Madison Casto (Sunnyvale/Homestead HS) started the rally with a leadoff double then capped it with a 2–out RBI single up the middle. In between, the action featured a double from
Anneliese Lopez (Ventura/Buena HS), three infield singles and throwing error that allowed two runs to score.
SFSU (10–23, 6–16) actually out–hit the Otters in the nightcap by a 7–6 margin, but the game never felt out of the control of sophomore
Lindsey Clarkson (Fresno/Central HS), who earned her 11th win with her sixth shutout of 2014. Clarkson entered the week as the CCAA strikeout leader but fanned only two Gators Friday.
The Otter offense gave her all the support she would need in the first inning when
Bianca Noriega's (Ventura/Camarillo HS) rocket double to dead center scored freshman speedster
Brianne Hollon (Agoura Hills/Alemany HS) all the way from first base. Casto added a 2–run single in the third to provide insurance runs that ultimately weren't needed.
Those runs weren't needed because the Otters played stellar defense behind Clarkson. They tied a school record by turning three double plays, with Hollon play key roles in two of them, including a great turn on a 5–4–3 effort to end the fifth inning.
Casto led the potent Otter offense with four hits and three RBIs on the day. Noriega ran her hitting streak to five games with a pair of singles in the opener and her RBI double in the nightcap.
The Otters and Gators are scheduled to conclude their 4–games series with a doubleheader Saturday at the Otter Sports Complex. First pitched is being moved up to 10 a.m. (from noon) due to inclement weather expected in the Monterey Bay area.
GO OTTERS!
