SEASIDE, Calif. -- The No. 16 Cal State Monterey Bay softball team tied the school record for longest winning streak in record–breaking fashion, scoring 16 runs in 16–0 opening game win at Cal State Stanislaus Friday afternoon at Warrior Field. Stanislaus came back to earn a split of the twinbill with a 3–0 win in the nightcap.
But even the late loss couldn't spoil the majesty of the Otters' 10th consecutive win, which equalled the mark set by the 2012 CCAA champion Otters. The 16 runs scored broke the record set four times previously, most recently by the aforementioned 2012 Otters at Cal State Stanislaus.
Evan more impressive than the record–breaking offense was the pitching of
Cori Reinhardt (Riverside Poly) and
Bianca Noriega (Ventura/Camarillo HS), who combined on a 5–inning no–hitter. It was the first no–hitter by an Otter since Diane Ortiz turned the trick in an 8–0, 6–inning win at Hawaii–Hilo in an NCAA Regional victory on May 14, 2010.
It continued a remarkable run of pitching by Reinhardt, who hasn't allowed a run in her last four outings and has allowed just one run in her past six. Her past six appearances have a line that includes a 5–0 record, a 0.21 ERA and 1.7 hits allowed per game. She'll enter Saturday's doubleheader with a personal streak of 20 2/3 scoreless innings.
Reinhardt wasn't the only Otter putting up gaudy numbers in the record–tying win. Junior infielder
Alissa Greenhaw (Galt/Cosumnes River College) tied the CSUMB record for RBIs in a game with six, with half of those coming on a bases–loaded triple in the third inning. She equaled the mark set by Shelair Rowell versus Western Oregon on Apil 4, 2009.
Freshmen
Anneliese Lopez (Ventura/Buena HS) and
Madison Casto (Sunnyvale/Homestead HS) each recorded the first 4–hit games of their careers, with both finishing the game 4–for–4 with three RBIs. Lopez's line included a first–inning double while Casto added a double and a triple.
Greenhaw gave Reinhardt the only run she would need with a sac fly in the second inning. RBI singles by Lopez in the second and Casto in the third extended the lead to 3–0 before Greenhaw blew the affair open with her bases–clearing double to close the third.
The Otters scored five runs in each of the third, fourth and fifth innings to set the scoring record.
Reinhardt and Noriega displayed such complete dominance, meanwhile, that the duo didn't allow a ball to leave the infield until Kristan Burns fouled out to shallow right for the game's penultimate out.
The nightcap saw the tables turn on the Otters as they couldn't unlock Stanislaus freshman Karina Callazo, who held them to four hits, their third–lowest output of the season.
CSUMB had several opportunities to score, including a glorious chance in the third inning when the first two batters walked in front of the top of the batting order. But the chance went for naught and Stanislaus jumped ahead in the bottom of the inning when Brianna Nicholson made the only CSUMB error of the day sting with a 2–out bouncer to right that plated a pair of unearned runs.
CSUMB and Stanislaus will finish their 4–game set with a Saturday doubleheader at Warrior Field. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
GO OTTERS!
