SAN FRANCISCO — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team sent its seniors out in style, finishing the season with a 61–50 win at San Francisco State Saturday night in The Swamp. With the victory, CSUMB ends the season the same way it started—with a 3–game winning streak.

CSUMB (8–17, 5–17 CCAA) began the season with three consecutive nonconference wins before injuries and attrition whittled the roster down to just eight healthy players by season's end. Nevertheless, the team adjusted and finished with three consecutive CCAA wins.

Of course, it could be said that it was the seniors who sent CSUMB out in style, as the Otter Class of 2014 did the yeomen's share of the work. Ashley Morgan (Rohnert Park/Santa Rosa JC) led the senior triumvirate with a 17–point, 13–rebound double–double. Holly Holcomb (Ventura/Buena HS) added 14 points, one off her career high, while Chezla Self (Sacramento/San Joaquin Delta College) chipped in nine points and five boards.

SFSU opened the game with a 6–0 run, but the Otters quickly responded as the teams played through five ties and three lead changes in the opening 15 minutes. With CSUMB trailing 17–16, a short jumper from Mykayla Harris (Orange/Villa Park HS) started a quick 9–0 run that gave the Otters a 25–17 lead they wouldn't relinquish.

A 3–pointer at the buzzer pulled SFSU to within 27–24 at the break and an Angela Van Sickle trey brought the Gators to within 32–31 three minutes into the second half. But Holcomb answered with a three of her own and then a layup on the next two Otter possessions to expand the CSUMB advantage back to six points. The Gators never got closer than two possessions of the lead for the final 16 minutes.

In addition to the Otter seniors, as a team CSUMB finished with a flourish as well. They held their third consecutive opponent and eighth overall to 50 or fewer points. The Otters close the season with the top scoring defense in both the CCAA and West Region, allowing just 59.2 points per game.
