SEASIDE, Calif. — For 30 minutes Saturday's senior night celebration for the Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team seemed destined to end with a victory. But things took a chilling turn late as the Otters scored just three points over the final 10:13 of regulation, allowing visiting Cal State Stanislaus to rally for a 72–54 win in The Kelp Bed.
CSUMB had just opened its biggest lead of the second half at 51–43 on a
Ryan Nitz (Rancho Cucamonga/Chaffey College) 3–pointer when the game took a wrong turn. Five consecutive foul calls against the Otters unbalanced the momentum and they never regained traction. By the time the dust had settled from the momentum swing, Stanislaus had completed a 19–0 run and removed all doubt from the game's outcome.
A balanced offense helped CSUMB maintain its lead throughout the first half with the Otters taking a 29–26 edge into the lockerroom. The Warriors stayed close but didn't draw their first lead of the night until a pair of Rob Walters free throws made it 52–51 with less than nine minutes remaining.
Nitz led the Otter offense with 13 points while sophomore
Alex Fertig (Fresno/Buchanan HS) chipped in 12. Seniors
Brandon Cole (Vallejo/Napa Valley College) and
Kris Gallop (Vallejo/Los Medanos College) each scored nine points in their final collegiate home games. Gallop added a team–high six rebounds.
CSUMB will close its 2103–14 schedule next weekend when it travels to the Bay area to face Sonoma State and San Francisco State Feb. 28 and Mar. 1.
