SEASIDE, Calif. — Although its inexperience showed early, the young Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team displayed a tremendous amount of grit late in a 68–57 loss to traditional power UC San Diego Friday night in The Kelp Bed. It was the CCAA opener for both teams.
UCSD (3–3) held the Otters to just three points over the game's opening 10 minutes. CSUMB's deficit grew to as many as 17 points before settling on 34–19 at the break.
That's when the Otters dug their heels into the court. UCSD never grew its lead above that 17–point margin as the teams played evenly throughout the second half.
A
Jenna Bandy (Thousand Oaks HS) 3–pointer pulled the Otters to within eight at 62–54 with three minutes remaining. The Otters got a stop and the chance to make it a two possession game, but a Farrah Shokoor steal and a Miranda Seto layup stopped the CSUMB run.
Another Bandy three pulled CSUMB back to within eight points at the 1:21 mark, but that's as close as the Otters would get.
Bandy led the Otters in scoring for the third consecutive game with 17 points. She also matched her career high in steals for the third consecutive game with three. Sophomore forward
McKenna Hill (Ventura/St. Bonaventure HS) added 10 points and eight rebounds.
Shokoor led all scorers with 17 points for UCSD. Dana Webster added a 12–point, 11–rebound double–double.
CSUMB (2–3) closes its brief 3–game homestand Saturday when it hosts 2014 NCAA Final Four participant Cal Poly Pomona for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
