SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team couldn't counter the sizzling shooting of visiting Holy Names University, which hit 10–of–19 from 3–point range to upset the Otters 69–66 Sunday afternoon in The Kelp Bed.
CSUMB (1–2 overall) actually led by as many as six in the first half before the Hawks used a 13–0 run to take a 21–14 lead with seven minutes remaining in the period The Otters fell behind by as many as 10 points in the second half before rallying to make the finish exciting.
Down 43–33, the Otters retook the lead when a
Jazmine Johnson Garden Grove/Santa Ana College) jumper capped a 15–4 run and made it 48–47 CSUMB at the 10 minute mark. The teams then played through four ties and three lead changes down the stretch before Holly Shafer broke a 66–66 deadlock with, fittingly, a 3–pointer with nine seconds remaining.
The Otters came down and had a decent look at a tying three that didn't fall.
McKenna Hll (Ventura/St. Bonaventure HS) grabbed the offensive board but couldn't kick it back out before time expired.
Jenna Bandy (Thousand Oaks HS) led the Otters with 13 points and a career–high eight rebounds while making her second collegiate start and first of the season. Johnson came off the bench to add 12 points, six boards and two blocks.
Tatiana Howard had 10 points, 14 rebounds and seven blocks to lead HNU (1–3)
The Otters will take some time off for the Thanksgiving holiday before returning to action Saturday to host incoming CCAA member Cal State San Marcos for a 1 p.m. tip.
GO OTTERS!
