Life In The 70s Suits Otters In Win At NDNU

Otters pick up first win of season Over Argonauts, 78–68

BELMONT, Calif. — Once again, life in the 70s was perfect for the Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team, which won for the 33rd time in its last 34 regular season games in which it reached 70 points with Saturday's 78–68 win at Notre Dame de Namur.

The game turned on a brilliant second half run by the Otters (1–1 overall), who went on a 20–3 streak midway through the second half to turn a 38–33 deficit into a 53–41 lead that wouldn't be threatened.

"Today was a great team win. We were a little flat and inconsistent in the first half, but used our defense to spark our offense in the second half," said CSUMB Head Coach Kerri Nakamoto (@CoachKNakamoto). "We were able to get a small lead and then we made some big plays down the stretch to pull out the W."

CSUMB got a game–high 18 points and seven rebounds from junior forward Jazmine Johnson (Garden Grove/Santa Ana College), though she was far from a one–woman show in this contest. All 12 Otters who saw action scored Saturday, including 10 who scored in the first half alone.

Point guard Ashley Whisler (Corona/Santa Ana College) added 12 points off the bench while senior guard Jenna Bandy (Thousand Oaks HS) chipped in 11. Starting point guard Stephanie Sack (Petaluma/Santa Rosa JC) dished a game–high five assists.

The game went back and forth early, with the Otters leading by as many as four and trailing by as many as five points in the first half before settling on a 33–32 lead at the break. But NDNU seized the upper hand after the restart, scoring the first six points to go up 38–33 before the second half was five minutes old.

After the first media timeout, CSUMB regrouped and five different Otters scored in an 11–0 run that began the decisive 20–3 spurt. CSUMB's lead hovered between eight and 14 points over the last 10 minutes before settling on the 10–point final margin.

The Otters will travel to The City to take on the University of San Francisco in an exhibition game Tuesday at 7 p.m. They return to regular season action Sunday, Nov. 23, when they host Holy Names University in their 2014–15 home opener.
