SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay returned to winning ways with a 25–16, 25–20, 25–20 sweep of visiting Cal State Stanislaus Saturday night in The Kelp Bed. It marked the third time this season that the Otters held an opponent under 60 points for the match.
CSUMB put together some impressive team statistics in the win. The Otters hit a season–high .337 for the match. It marked their best attack percentage in a winning effort since they hit .352 in a sweep of Notre Dame de Namur on Sept. 7, 2012.
Janai Johnson (Sacramento/Bradshaw Christian) and
Jessica Malcolm (Lodi HS) led the offense with 11 and 10 kills respectively.
DJ Gresham-Ryder (Stockton/Cesar Chavez HS) added eight kills, her most since posting a season–high 12 in CSUMB's 4–set win at Stanislaus on Sept. 19.
Gresham-Ryder and Johnson shared match–high honors with three blocks apiece.
Kelsey Johnston (Ripon HS) added a healthy 33 assists while
Rachel Cookus (Thousand Oaks HS) chipped in 11 digs and three aces.
The Otters put on a tour de force in the opening set, hitting .464 with just one error. CSUMB closed the set on a 13–3 run to swat aside the Warrior upset bid.
Although the score was closer, the Otters never trailed in taking the match by the scruff of the neck with a 25–20 win in Set 2. CSUMB raced to a 10–4 lead, saw Stanislaus claw its way back to a 14–14 tie, then used three Malcolm kills in a 6–point span to gain the separation they needed to put the set away.
The final set mirrored the second, with the Otters grabbing an early lead before Stanislaus rallied to catch them. This time, kills by
Julia Ashen (North Salinas HS), Johnson and Malcolm kick–started the final push that turned a 16–16 tie into ultimate victory.
After a brief sojourn to the other Bay area to take on Cal State East Bay Wednesday evening in Hayward, the Otters return to The Kelp Bed to host Cal State Dominguez Hills Halloween night for a 7 p.m. first serve.
GO OTTERS!
