Otters Suffer Hard Fought Loss To Cal State LA, 2-0

Two late goals in 73' hurt Otters after putting together 5 first half shots

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — In a hard fought game, the Cal State Monterey Bay Men's Soccer team saw themselves on the wrong side of two second half goals to Cal State Los Angeles, as the CSULA handed CSUMB the 2-0 loss at Jesse Owens Track in Los Angeles, Calif on Friday evening.

The first 45 minutes of play saw fast paced play highlighted by a total of 13 shots, none of which found the back of the net due to solid hands in goal from Otter net minder Evan Drake (Sacramento, Calif./ El Camino HS) and Golden Eagle goalie Matt Beigarten.

Cal State L.A. turned it on in the second half, accumulating eight more shots, two for goals off the foot of Jordan Payne. Payne would strike twice in a matter of 41 seconds to give the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead that they would not relinquish.

"We played well, but when we gave up the first goal, our heads went down," head coach Rob Cummings (@RobCummings3) said about his team. "We are good but lack the killer instinct to play through adversity."

Seven different Otters tallied a shot in the match, however, only three were shots on goal. Drake contributed five saves to his teams efforts.

CSUMB falls to 2–5–3, 1–3–1 CCAA after the defeat tonight, while CSULA moves to 8–2–0, 4–1–0 CCAA. Cal State Monterey Bay will continue the road trip to take on Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sunday afternoon.  Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
