CARSON, Calif. — Senior forward
Ashley Morgan (Rohnert Park/Santa Rosa JC) poured in a career–high 21 points, but it wasn't quite enough as Cal State Dominguez Hills held off a pair of late Otter rallies to win 75–62 Friday night in The Torodome.
Morgan matched the 21 points she scored in the first meeting against Dominguez Hills in The Kelp Bed on Dec. 7. Led by Morgan, the Otters matched their second–highest output of the season and their highest road scoring total.
CSUMB jumped to an early lead and still led 17–12 when Dominguez Hills got hot, using a 21–3 spurt to take its biggest lead of the half at 33-20. As they would several times in the game, the Otters regrouped and finished the period with a 7–2 run to pull to within 35–27 at the break.
The Otters continued the run into the second half, starting the period with a 12–1 streak to take their first lead of the period at 37–36. An
Angelique Bailey (Fontana/Etiwanda HS) gave CSUMB its final lead at 42–40.
That's when the Toros again threatened to run and hide, seemingly putting the game away by going up 14 at 63–49 with less than six minutes to play when CSUMB rallied one final time.
The Otters pulled to within six points twice down the stretch—three times holding the ball with a chance to get closer—before the Toros made 10 of 11 free throws in the final 1:21 to pull away down the stretch.
Morgan was the only Otter to score in double figures.
McKenna Hill (Ventura/St. Bonaventure HS) and
Chezla Self (Sacramento/S.J. Delta College) led CSUMB with six rebounds apiece. Monay Lee, who scored a CSUMB opponent record 34 points the first time these teams met, led four Toros in double figures with 18 points.
CSUMB continues its 4–game roadtrip Saturday by traveling up I–710 to face Cal State L.A. at 5:30 p.m.
GO OTTERS!
