Senior Natalie Argueta knocks in the game-winning goal for CSUMB.

Otters notched first win of 2013, dominating the Sunbirds

BOX SCORE SEASIDE, Calif. – Senior midfielder Natalie Argueta (Costa Mesa HS) scored the only goal of the game Saturday to lift the Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer team over Fresno Pacific, 1-0.

The win puts the Otters at 1-1-0 on the year while the Sunbirds (1-1-0) took home their first loss of 2013.

"We played well today, stat wise we had a lot of shots on goal," said Head Coach Erin Reinke. "The energy and team effort was there."

The Otters dominated throughout the entire game, posting a 25-1 shot advantage over the Sunbirds with 13 being on frame.

Notching a shutout, CSUMB keeper Kendra Gillio (San Jose, Calif./Valley Christian HS) didn't see much action due to the strong Otter defense that kept the ball in the attacking third.

Juniors Jami Murray (Newbury Park, Calif./City College of San Francisco) and Hannah Cobb (Hollister, Calif./San Benito HS) led CSUMB's offense with five shots apiece, while sophomore Kristen Womack (Roseville, Calif./Woodcreek HS) contributed four.

For the second consecutive game, CSUMB held the edge on corner kicks after notching 12 against FPU.

"I think getting that many shots on goal and corner kicks gave us that much more experience," Reinke said. "We just have to keep working on finishing and placing. That will come with a bit more practice."
