Senior Evan Drake recorded his fourth shutout of his career.
BOX SCORE SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team is off to the best start in program history since becoming a full-fledge member of NCAA Division II in 2007. The Otters opened their home schedule with a 2-0 victory over Academy of Art on Saturday afternoon.
"I was pleased with the victory and the shutout was a team effort," said Head Coach
Rob Cummings. "However, we need to get better at playing with the lead. Academy of Arts is a good team and we gave some chances away that almost cost us.
"We will take this win and grow from it as we get ready for Conference Play next weekend."
The Otters close out their nonconference schedule with a 2-0 record and will host Humboldt State on Friday, Sept. 7 at 12:30 p.m. at the Otter Sports Complex.
After a scoreless first half, sophomore
Michael Brixey (Truckee HS) netted CSUMB's first goal in the 60th minute. A corner from junior
Aaron Kochman (Boise, Idaho, Centennial HS) found Brixey breaking through two defenders. He finished it off with a header past FPU's keeper Joshua Leader.
The second goal came on a 2-on-1 breakaway with
Alberto Anguiano (Oxnard, Calif./Pacifica HS) speeding past the defense and cutting it back to
Servando Perez (Guadalupe, Calif./Righetti HS) who, finished it with a shot past a diving Leader.
Leader kept Art U in the game with a huge save on Kochman's shot to upper 90 from 20-yards out, deflecting it over the crossbar for another Otter corner.
CSUMB controlled most of the game, producing a 17-9 shot advantage over the visiting Urban Knights with 12 coming in the final 45 minutes.
