BOX SCORE SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The No. 21 Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team exited San Bernardino with a 4-2 series finale win to split their final regular season road trip with Cal State San Bernardino Sunday.
With the win, the Otters tied their single season record for victories at 26.
Seniors
Victor Rasor-Thompson (San Diego/Univ. of San Diego) and
Ronnie Fhurong (Hollister/San Benito HS) led the Otters with two hits apiece.
Senior
Jordan Helmkamp (Aliso Viejo/Saddleback College) (0-3) earned the win after five innings of work, giving up two runs on four hits and striking out three batters. Junior
A.J. Quintero (Vacaville/Sacramento City College) continues to lead the CCAA in saves after picking up his eighth.
Rasor-Thompson got things going with a leadoff ground-ruled double to right corner in the first inning. Senior
Brian Haggett (Hollister/West Valley) followed with a Texas-Leaguer single to center and senior
Tommy George (Elk Grove HS) hit a RBI single to right field to give the Otters a 1-0 lead.
In the second, junior
Cannon Bernarding (San Jose/West Valley College) dropped a blooper in the right field and advanced to third on a hit and run on Rasor-Thompson's single through the right side. Fhurong put another ball through the right side to score Bernarding, raising CSUMB's lead to 2-0.
In the bottom half of the frame, the Coyotes cut the lead to 2-1 on a ground out by Curtis Cassise that brought in Colton Johnson, who reached on a one-out single.
In the fifth, senior
Jason Merjano (San Ramon/Sierra College) hit two-out single through the right side. Senior
David Garcia (Gilroy/Mission College) brought him home with a RBI double off the right center wall to make it 3-1 CSUMB.
CSUSB answered again in the bottom of the frame, with Steven Chagolla hitting a RBI single to score Michael Castello who led off the inning with a single.
CSUMB added an insurance run in the eighth to make it 4-2. Senior
Nolan Murray (San Diego/Steele Canyon HS) scored on a first-and-third situation after he advanced from second to third on a wild pitch and
Jesse Olson (Citrus Heights/Sierra College) was caught in a rundown between first and second.
The Otters host Cal Poly Pomona in another four-game conference series beginning on Friday, April 19 at 3 p.m.
