CSUMB earns second CCAA series victory with eyes on the series sweep

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 SAN FRANCISCO – The Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team's bats were on fire Saturday, collecting 26 hits to secure a series victory with a doubleheader sweep over San Francisco State. The Otters notched their second shutout of the season with a 7-0 win in the first game and followed it with an extra inning 6-4 victory in the nightcap.

CSUMB's pitching staff limited the Gators to 10 hits in 17 innings.

The Otters will look for its first series sweep when they host the Gators in the series finale at 11 a.m.

GAME 1: CSUMB 7, SF STATE 0
Junior Will Anderson (Pleasanton, Calif./Fresno State) earned the win after a four-hit seven-inning appearance. He struck out seven batters and walked only two.

Senior David Garcia (Gilroy, Calif./Mission College) led the Otters, going 3-for-5 with two runs.

The Otters took a quick 2-0 lead in the second inning on a Gator fielding error and never looked back, going on to post a run in each of the final five innings.

Zack Malik received the loss despite only allowing one earned run in six innings.

GAME 2: CSUMB 6, SF STATE 4 (8 innings)
The Otters kept the momentum rolling, striking early with two runs in the first inning. Senior Brian Haggett (Hollister, Calif./West Valley College) tripled in the first run and then scored on a Mark Hurley (Hollister, Calif./College of San Mateo) single down the third base line.

Yet the nightcap proved to be a different story entirely. The Gators finally touched home plate with two runs in the third on David Villa's single through the left side.

The Otters retook the lead in the fifth. Back-to-back singles by Tommy George (Elk Grove, Calif./Elk Grove HS) and Victor Rasor-Thompson (San Diego, Calif./Univ. of San Diego) drove in Jesse Olson (Citrus Heights, Calif./Sierra College) and Andres Coll (Panarama, Calif./Arieta HS) who both reached first after being hit by a pitch.

The Gators answered with Grady Espinosa's two-run homer to even it up once again at 4-4.

With the game schedule as only a seven-inning outing, CSUMB quickly took control in its first at bat in the extra frame.  After loading the bases in the top of the eighth, the Otters scored on another Gator fielding error and a fielder's choice. This proved to be enough to secure the 6-4 win.

George led the Otters with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate.

Sophomore Jeff Owen (Clovis, Calif./Clovis East) got a no-decision after five innings of work and recording six strikeouts.  Senior Jordan Helmkamp (Aliso Viejo, Calif./Saddleback College) got his first win after two scoreless innings and A.J. Quintero (Vacaville, Calif./Sacramento City College) picked up his third save.

SF State's reliever Peter Reyes took the loss. Espinosa was the only Gator to record multiple hits in the nightcap with two.
