Otters open four-game set in Hayward with Friday doubleheader

SEASIDE, Calif. — No. 17 Cal State Monterey Bay will get its first taste of CCAA road action this weekend when it heads to the Bay area to take on Cal State East Bay in a four–game set Friday and Saturday, Feb. 22–23. Both days will feature doubleheader action with first pitch scheduled noon.

CSUMB (8–5, 3–1 CCAA) is 7–7 all–time vs. Cal State East Bay (2–8, 0–4). The Otters hold a 7–5 edge in games played at the NCAA Division II level. The Pioneers have won all four games between the teams in Hayward (Feb. 26–27, 2011).

Cori Reinhardt (Riverside Poly) and Skyler Valdivia (Beaumont HS) lead the potent Otter offense with averages of .487 and .462 respectively. In the circle, freshman Lindsey Clarkson (Fresno/Central HS) is 2–0 with 24 strikeouts in 21 2/3 innings

After splitting a four–game set with Dominican to open the season, East Bay has dropped six straight, including a series sweep by Humboldt State at Pioneer Field last weekend.

Senior infielder Taryn Thomas leads a trio of Pioneers hitting above .300 with a .355 average. Andi Andersen (1–1, 4.04 ERA) and Lauren Zweigle (1–4, 4.20) have been East Bay's top two pitchers.

OTTER SOFTBALL ODDS & ENDS

THESE GIRLS ARE ON FIRE: Sophomore P/INF Cori Reinhardt (Riverside Poly) and senior OF Skyler Valdivia (Beaumont HS) have started the season on fire at the plate, ranking No. 4 and No. 9 in the CCAA in batting average. Valdivia, a 2011 All–CCAA selection, is hitting .462 while Reinhardt, a 2012 first team All–American, is hitting .487 entering this weekend's action.

PRODUCTION > POWER: While the Otters are not hitting home runs at the record–setting pace they did in 2012 — in fact, Lauren Ermitano (Hayward/Ohlone College) owns the only Otter home run of 2013 — the offense continues to be highly productive. CSUMB enters the weekend averaging a healthy 5.2 runs per game.

I'LL HAVE THE RIBEYE, WELL DONE: One season after former Otter Nina Villanueva set the CCAA record for RBIs in one season (69), Cori Reinhardt is already on pace to smash that mark. Reinhardt has 19 RBIs through the first 13 games, putting her on pace to drive in 80 runs in the regular season.

SPEED KILLS: The Otters are utilizing speed to create offense in 2013. CSUMB enters the week No. 2 in the CCAA with 23 teams steals. Skyler Valdivia tops the conference individual leaderboard with eight stolen bases in eight attempts.

STREAKING OTTERS: Lindsey Clarkson enters Friday's doubleheader riding a five–game hitting streak, one away from the longest by an Otter so far this season (6 by Skyler Valdivia and Angelina Orozco). Cori Reinhardt, meanwhile, has reached base safely in all 13 games this season.

LOW HITTERS: While there hasn't been a no–hitter pitched by an Otters in the early going, both Cory Reinhardt and freshman Lindsey Clarkson (Fresno/Central HS) are both mastering low–hit performances. Reinhardt has tossed four complete games allowing four or fewer hits, including a one–hitter in a 10–0 defeat of Holy Names on Feb. 10. Clarkson, meanwhile, has three such games to her credit, including three–hit wins over Holy Names (Feb. 3) and Hawaii–Hilo (Feb. 11).

HAVE MERCY: The Otters tied the school record with 10 run–rule wins (leading by eight or more runs after five innings) in 2012. The 2013 Otters already have four such wins through the first 13 games.

WALK–OFF WINS: The Otters have earned five walk–off wins already this season. Three of them have come via run–rule The other two were a 3–2, 10–inning win over Hawaii–Hilo (Feb. 11) and an 8–7 win over Cal State Stanislaus (Feb. 15).
