Otters Earn Split At East Bay, Lead Series 2-1

CSUMB wins nightcap 3-1 after falling 8-3 in Saturday's twinbill

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 HAYWARD, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team bounced back with a 3-1 victory over Cal State East Bay in the second half of a twinbill Saturday after a 8-3 loss in the opener. 
 
The doubleheader was highlighted by junior Mark Hurley's (Hollister, Calif./College of San Mateo) homer in the nightcap. 
 
The Otters (7-3, 2-1 CCAA) enter Sunday's four-game finale a win away from taking the CCAA season-opening series from the Pioneers (8-2, 1-2 CCAA).  First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the Otter Sports Complex
 
GAME 1: CSUEB 8, CSUMB 3
The Otters got on the board first with a RBI single by Ronnie Fhurong (Hollister, Calif./San Benito HS) in the second, but had to play catch-up the rest of the game.
 
Behind 11 hits and two CSUMB errors, the Pioneers spread out eight runs in four innings. 
 
Junior Will Anderson (Pleasanton, Calif./Fresno State) took the loss after 4.2 innings of work, watching six runs score yet only having three marked as earned.  CSUEB's Michael Pope picked up his third win of 2013.
 
GAME 2: CSUMB 3, CSUEB 1
Sophomore Jeff Owen (Clovis, Calif./Clovis East) tossed a complete seven-inning game, allowing on one run on five hits.  He racked up three of his five strikeouts in the final inning to secure his third win of the season.
 
Olson's two-out single in the second inning plated senior Brian Haggett (Hollister, Calif./West Valley College) to put CSUMB up 1-0.
 
The Otters added to their lead in the fourth on Hurley's homer over the left center wall. 
 
Pioneers close the gap to 2-1 on a sacrifice fly by Brandon Alexander.
 
CSUMB added an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Haggett hit into a fielder's choice with the base loaded, scoring junior Jason Brady (Campbell, Calif./West Valley College).
 
CSUEB's Matt Fontaine took his first loss of the season despite only allowing two earned runs in seven innings.
